The medieval town is especially worth visiting during an outing on foot. Wander around the streets and enjoy the the charm of the half-timbered houses and different monuments in the town. The château, built between the 12th and 14th centuries, was the place of residence for numerous kings of France, such as François I or Henry IV. You can also visit the Hôtel de Ville, the law courts, the Sainte Madeleine church and the Hôtel Prévost.

The Musée de la Pailleterie

Visit this museum situated in the grounds of a château. It is composed of two old barns and displays collections of past equipment, once used in the different professions of rural France. Discover the progress of agriculture over the last century.

This old lock offers you entertainment, interactive features, documents and temporary exhibitions throughout the year. The marina Montargis has a pretty marina worth visiting during a walk around the heart of the town. Wander over the quays and finish in one of the city’s restaurants, on the lookout for local cuisine.

Fine food

Montargis’ cuisine is renowned above all for its pastries and confectionery, (the Pithiviers, the Coquelicot de Nemours, the Sucre d’Orge des Religieuses de Moret) but also for its meats (Grand Cru lamb and beef). Gâtinais is also a land of plants, notable for its saffron culture. Exquisite almonds, grilled and caramelised and covered with brown sugar, Pralines were born in Montargis, under the reign of Louis XIII. Go to one of the many confectioner’s shops in the town to buy some!
